Manual Shutter operation. The next generation.

For many years the standard method of operation with shutters was the traditional timber rod fixed to the middle of the louvre visible from the front, where the rod was connected to each louvre with a staple in the rod and louvre. This developed to an offset version, where the rod was moved towards the outside of the panel instead of the centre, but still visible from the front. As trends changed customers wanted a less visible option, which saw the birth of the “Clearview” operation where the front timber rod was replaced with a metal rod fixed to the rear side of each louvre. The connecting rod was somewhat hidden.

”Clearview” operation has been the mainstay of shutter production for many years, so what’s next? Luxsol have developed a rack and pinion system called Invisible Tilt which takes the visible mechanical connection and hides this inside the side stile. Hence the option now available to customers with Luxsol’s “Invisible Tilt. This operation has sometimes also been known as; “Hidden Tilt, Super Tilt or Easy Tilt”.

The rack and pinion system converts rotational motion into linear motion. Its precision, reliability, and simplicity make it an ideal choice for operating shutters.

What is a Rack and Pinion Mechanism?

A rack and pinion system consists of two key components:

The Rack: A flat, toothed bar or rail.

The Pinion: A circular gear with teeth that mesh with the rack.

When the pinion rotates, it engages the teeth of the rack, causing it to move in a straight line. This mechanism is commonly used in steering systems, conveyor belts, and now innovatively in Luxsol’s modern shutter systems.

How Does it Work in a Manual Operation in Shutters?

The pinion is connected to each louvre hidden inside the stile. Rotating a louvre causes the pinion to turn, moving the rack and, consequently all the louvres connected via a pinion to the same rack system.

This approach is straightforward and requires minimal maintenance.

Advantages of Using Rack and Pinion for Shutters

1. Smooth and Precise Motion:

   – The interlocking teeth of the rack and pinion ensure a controlled and smooth operation, avoiding jerky movements.

2. Durability:

   – Made from robust reinforced polymer, rack and pinion systems are built to withstand frequent use.

3. Compact Design:

   – The system’s simple structure fits well into compact spaces, making it ideal for sleek shutter designs. Saving space at the rear of the louvre.

4. Ease of Maintenance:

   – With fewer moving parts compared to other mechanisms, maintaining a rack and pinion system is straightforward and cost-effective.

The rack and pinion mechanism, is an engineering marvel that has found a home in shutter operations. This system offers unmatched reliability and efficiency. A rack and pinion setup is a worthwhile investment that ensures smooth operation and minimalist look.
